Tips for Writing Your Own Vows

Many couples go down the road of reciting traditional vows for their weddings, "to have and to hold till death do us part", but writing your own vows is a meaningful, emotional, and guaranteed to be memorable. The exchanging of vows is one of the most intimate moments in your wedding and writing your own will add that special touch. 

So, if you want to write your vows but not sure how to begin then you're in the right place because we have some great tips to help you get started! 

GET THE O.K

Unfortunately, some ceremony officiants will not allow personalized vows, may require traditional vows, or might have some restrictions on your vows so make sure you have clearance before embarking on the writing process. 

BEGIN EARLY

Give yourself some wiggle room for writing. It's always a benefit to be able to write your vows, step away, and then come back to review. Preparing in advance will allow you to practice and feel more relaxed. Plus, it also helps in eliminating some of the jitters you may encounter if you decide to write them the night before

INSPIRATION

Just because you're writing personalized vows doesn't mean you can't incorporate some traditional lines as well! You can look to traditional vows or religious vows and work in your vows to make it more customized to you. Another option if you decide to mix the two is reciting traditional vows and then throwing some personalized lines at the very end. 

TOGETHER OR INDIVIDUAL

A big question is whether you and your partner will want to sit down and collaborate on writing your vows or step away and surprise one another on the big day.  If you decide to write them separately, selecting a general structure may be a good idea to ensure a pair of vows that match but still maintain your voice. 

Keep in mind that for some the surprise element may be stressful so evaluate the kind of people you are and discuss with your partner whether the surprise will be fun and exciting or an added stresser.

DETAILS

Details are so imperative to personalizing your vows. Choose words that represent how you feel about your partner or ones that reflect your passion for one another. By using the small details, you are able to symbolize your relationship perfectly to how you see it.

A few ideas of things you could use are: What do you love most about your partner? What does he/she appreciate most about you? How do those things contribute to your relationship? And what could you continue to work on to make your relationship better and everlasting? 

IT'S ALL ABOUT YOU

Remember that ultimately, this is your day. If you're a funny person then use that to your advantage in your vows. If you're a poetic and romantic person then use that! It's okay if your vows are silly, sappy, short, or even if you want to sing your vows! This is your day and your moment, so these vows sound like you, and if they are sincere, then you can do no wrong.

Wedding Wednesday: 10 Ways to Make Sure Your Wedding Isn't Borning

Are you at that time in your life when you have a wedding every weekend? Are you tired of the same old boring receptions? If you said yes to either of the above statements, then this Wedding Wednesday is for you. Listed below are some ideas of how to keep your wedding flow while keeping guests happy!

 

1. Make introductions at the rehearsal.

A wedding brings together two families and sets of friends Invite relatives and out-of-town guests to the rehearsal dinner to break the ice, and introduce those who might have common interests. By the time the wedding rolls around, your guests will have met in a more relaxed atmosphere the evening before and (hopefully) keep the conversations going at the reception.

2. Stick to the schedule.

No one expects things to run exactly on time but you don't want to force your guests to idle around while you take your formal wedding pictures. This is where the cocktail hour comes in. Set up a lounge, shady courtyard or decorated room for your guests to mingle, drink, dance a little or relax. Also, make a schedule for the "important" people in the wedding. This way everyone knows what is happening and at what time. 

 

3. Don't let guests go hungry.

Hors d'oeuvres are necessary!  Even if you plan on serving a full dinner at your reception, it's a good idea to have a few snacks for your guests to nosh on while they wait for you and your new spouse to make your grand entrance. Mini hotdogs, meatballs, chicken/vegetable skewers or mozzerella sticks are all great options. Your guests will be refreshed from the ceremony and ready to party at the reception. 

4. Plan an exit strategy.

If you really want guests to be able to enjoy themselves at your reception, arrange for transportation to get them home safely afterward. Some couples choose to throw their reception in a hotel banquet hall and block off rooms for their guests, while others hire a shuttle service to run throughout the night. This extra consideration gives guests the freedom to drink without worrying about getting home safely when the party wraps up.

5. Consider your venue.

Of course, your budget will be a huge factor in determining where you throw your wedding, but picking an interesting or fun reception site can go a long way. Many science museums will let you rent out their exhibit areas, and zoos often have banquet areas with the animals in full view. Even an otherwise bland reception space can be dressed up with dramatic decor (like up-lights) or specialty entertainment (photo booths).

6. Work your seating chart.

There's nothing more uncomfortable than being the one couple at a table where you don't know anyone and everyone else went to high school together. A well-played seating chart is a cost-free way to make sure your guests spend time with people they like -- or even to set them up with someone new!

7. Put a time limit on toasts.

Yes, it's nice to hear words of encouragement and well wishes, but unless your friends are moonlighting as stand-up comedians, an overly long toast can easily go from sentimental to excruciating. Limit the number and length of toasts to a few key guests (think: maid of honor, best man, your parents), and let everyone get back to the party.

8. Bring in the...clowns?

Remember that scary clown/magician from your eighth birthday party? Today's specialty performers are nothing like that. The options for wedding entertainment span from tricked-out DJs to belly dancers to singing waiters.

9. Think beyond wedding cake.

Wedding cakes are still a staple, but consider expanding the selection for those with a sweet tooth. We're talking a full dessert bar with everything from whoopie pies, truffles, cupcakes, candies, along with local delicacies like fried Oreos or black-and-white cookies. The dessert bar can double as your wedding favor by setting out plastic bags or boxes for your guests to take a snack for the road.

10. Relax -- seriously.

Planning a wedding can be stressful, but when the day arrives, everyone will have more fun if you can overlook any little mishaps and let loose. Think about it: Do you have fun at parties where the host is incessantly on edge? To avoid ruining your good mood, assign any last-minute tasks to a bridesmaid, relative, or your wedding planner.

Wedding Wednesday: Color Mistakes to Avoid

Happy Wedding Wednesday! One of the many important decisions for a bride are the colors that she chooses for her wedding. With that in mind, don't fall into these common mistakes!

1. Be careful not to choose too many colors! This can be messy and look bad in pictures. Choose three or four that go nicely together and you won't regret it.

2. Be cautious about choosing a color for your wedding just because it is in style. Choose what YOU like! It is your special day and you will be the one looking back at these beautiful pictures for the rest of your life. Choose what will make you happy for years to come.

3. When you do choose your wedding colors, be sure that they will match your venue as well. It is easier to change your color than it is to repaint an entire building. If they match, great. If not, it's okay to be flexible.

4. Your wedding invitiations will be the first glimpse that  guests have into your wedding.  With that said, it is a cute idea to have the invitation colors match your actual wedding so it can set the tone early on and get guests excited!

5. Don't worry about matching everything. If you choose teal as your wedding color, not many natural flowers come in that color. In this case, just select a neutral colored flower instead. This will flatter the teal and still leave guests blown away!

Last minute Wedding Details!

Hello all brides or future brides! Another Wedding Wednesday is upon us! We have come up with some last minute wedding details to take care of before the big day so that you can enjoy your day with ease!

1. Assign a point a person! This is crucial. Whether it's your maid of honor or a relative, it is important to have somebody there for you to do all the little things! You might choose a relative over your maid of honor if you want your maid of honor to be at your side and keep you calm! The point person can be in charge of:

    -Telling family about reserved seating

    - Someone to collect gifts and telling everyone to sign the guest book

    - Putting overnight or honeymoon bags in car

    - Picking up your dress after the wedding! (You obviously aren't going to take it with you on the honey moon so you need someone to hold on to it for you)

 

Here are some other things not to forget!

1. Remembering a pretty hanger for your dress

2. Packing your cell phone charger- A lot of stressed out friends and relatives may call for directions or other questions so make sure you have a fully charged phone! You may want to put one of your bridesmaids in charge of answering it though :)

3. Vendor Contact List: If you are working with multiple vendors on your wedding day, it will be useful to have their contact information on hand. Hand the full vendor list over to your point person, or keep the list in your wedding emergency kit, just in case.

4. Bringing extra cash and international travel documents - You may want to tip your hairdresser, the band, or a bellhop! 

6. Writing your thank-you speech- Even though it is not required to give a big lengthy speech, it is a good idea to thank you guests for attending as well as your bridal party and parents!

7. Packing an emergency day-of kit, including a back up CD!

8. Making a "Just Married" sign or put a crafty friend in charge of that ;)

9. Of course- don't forget Something Old, Something New, Something Borrowed and Something Blue!

10. Bringing your cake cutter- The caterer's might not be as nice!

11. Creating an itinerary- You may know where to be at all times but create an itinerary for your guests and out of town relatives so they know how much time they have inbetween the ceremony and reception and if they should eat in between!

22. Marriage Certificate! This is actually the most commonly forgotten thing!
